LVA Plan for COVID-19

As we continue to monitor developments regarding COVID-19, LVA recognizes that some of our tutors and students may be negatively affected by the impacts of this global epidemic. As always, our focus is on the safety and well-being of the communities and patrons we serve, and our thoughts are with those who have been impacted. To that end, we stand ready to work with those who have decided to stop thier in-person tutoring sessions, and we are taking the necessary steps to avoid potential disruptions to thier tutoring sessions.

We have compiled a sample of possible distance learning options that should enable you to continue the amazing work that you are doing with your students while socially distancing yourself as recommended by the CDC and the local authorities. Please coordinate with your students about which service you will be using.

While it is impossible for anyone to predict the spread of COVID-19 and fully understand its impact, it does not alter LVA’s focus on continuing to serve you and your students. LVA will continue to monitor all developments and will do its best to keep you informed as we follow library and state guidelines.

Distance Learning

Below please find a sample of FREE complementary alternatives to in-person sessions that have proven to be successful.
Picture

Video/Voice Conference

You can conduct a video/voice conference from the comfort of your home and cover the same materials/topics that you present in your sessions or share supporting material that will enhance your lessons. The video/voice conference sessions should be on the same day and time that your regular sessions take place.

  • Google Hangouts (Tutorial)
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Skype
  • WhatsApp
  • Zoom (Tutorial)  -Free for 40 minutes sessions. Temporary unlimited time sessions with an LVA email account.
  Suggested Activities:
  • Choose a random selection of Scrabble tiles, about 10 or 12 in number, that might be used to create a longer word such as "presidential". Ask your students to create as many words as they can from the letters and to give you each word, in order to keep tally. Make it more challenging by limiting the minimum number of letters per word.
  • Dictate a sentence to your students and ask them to write it down. Go as slowly as needed, but give no spelling or punctuation cues. Then have your students read the sentence back to you while you check for pronunciation and accuracy. Have them re-read the sentence as they identify capital letters and use appropriate punctuation. Finally, quiz them on the spelling of several of the more challenging words. Repeat with 3 to 5 sentences.
  • Give your students a list of 5 to 10 verbs (or nouns) to be written in a column. Check that each word is understood, reasonably pronounced, and spelled correctly. Then ask them to add an appropriate adverb or adjective to each. Then compose a sentence with each phrase created.

Written Assignments

You can share written activities/assignments with your students and they can respond by submitting the completed materials back to you for correction.

  • Emails
  • Google Classroom (Tutorial)
  • Google Docs (Tutorial)
  • Google Forms (Tutorial)
  • Padlet (Tutorial)

  Suggested Activities:

  • Provide a specific link to a reading site and have them read it and, in a short paragraph, offer either a summary or an opinion or whatever response you want back from them.” For example:
                            https://www.elcivics.com/lifeskills/breakfast.pdf
  • Send a list of very basic sentences. Then ask them to add adjectives, adverbs and then change the verbs to more specific ones, as well as add some phrases to make it interesting.
  • Send a list of sentences that are out of order. Have your student send them back in order. “Out of order” could be the words of each sentence or could be the sentence order of a simple story or paragraph.

Texting

You can text activities/assignments to your students and have them send back the completed work via:

  • Regular texts (if everyone has unlimited texting)
  • Facebook Messenger
  • WhatsApp
  Suggested Activities:

  • Text a list of adjectives, adverbs, or verbs, appropriate for your students. Ask your students to use the words in a sentence which they can text to you or write in their notebook and photograph the completed work to send back to you.
  • Text a question to your students and ask that they send back a sentence in reply. Examples can be normal conversational ones, like: “What did you do today?” Or “What would you do with a papaya and a bottle of wine?” Or “Why would you sit on the floor instead of a chair?”
  • Text an incomplete sentence to your students, then ask them to complete it and send it back to you.

Please feel free to contact our staff for guidance on how to utilize the options described above or to share other ways in which we can better assist you and your students:
